Whole30 Update: Week 4

As I write this, I’m on my last day of Whole30! I (kind of) made it to the end! I’ll do a full recap next week of my overall thoughts and feelings. If you’ve got any Whole30 related questions, leave a comment and I’ll touch those. But first, let’s talk about last week, shall we?

What I Ate

Most of the week ended up being a complete mishmash of food, trying to clean out my kitchen before things went bad. Smoothies continue to be a staple as my breakfast. Starting my day with a big dose of fruits and vegetables gets me in the right mindset. I feel like I’m making healthier choices the rest of the day.

On Sunday, I met up with a friend for brunch and had the most amazing tofu breakfast scramble. I’ve known that you can use tofu instead of eggs for a scramble, but I’d never done it on my own. I am excited to experiment at home!

She had a mimosa and I was really proud of myself for not ordering one as well. The temptation was absolutely there, but I stayed strong. If I’m being honest, though, the $6 price tag on a tiny glass did factor heavily into my decision making process. Perhaps more than the fact that alcohol isn’t allowed on Whole30.

How I’m Feeling

Last week, I talked about how I knew I need to incorporate grains back into my diet. Technically, this means I’m not actually doing Whole30 anymore, because the plan is pretty strict that if you deviate, then you’re supposed to start over. What can I say? I’m a rebel. I knew that following the plan as it is laid out just wasn’t working for me. I was living in a fog with no energy, and I couldn’t keep going like that. So, I’m doing this my way. A little brown rice isn’t the end of the world.

Honestly, it was probably one of the best decisions I could have made. I just wasn’t getting enough carbs otherwise and that’s not a sustainable way to eat. Some people can operate just fine that way. I’m not one of them. I just had about a serving of grains a day, but it made a world of difference in how I felt. My energy rebounded so quickly and I felt like a brand new person. My head felt clear again and my productivity bounced back. I honestly wish I had added the grains back in sooner. Following a plan is only as good as it works for your specific needs. And, as it’s laid out, Whole30 isn’t a whole fit for me. And, that’s okay, especially because my intention was more to reset my habits than anything else.

All in all, I am feeling really great now that I found the right balance of macronutrients that works for my body.
