Race Recap: Resolution Run
I had originally planned on doing this race, then with being sick the first part of the month, I changed my mind. Then, I changed it back. I can be so indecisive!
Andi, Kayla, and I met up about an hour before the race was set to begin. As the race got closer, we ventured out towards the starting line where things were still getting set up. One of the photographers took some horribly cheesy (but adorable!) pictures of us waiting around.
It was awesome to not be freezing cold while we waited. I was extremely grateful for the weather. 52 degrees on New Year’s Eve in Michigan? That just doesn’t happen too often, so I’ll take it! I was ready to get the show on the road, though.
It was only the second time I’ve used my Garmin and I was starting to get anxious because it kept searching for the satellite signal. I felt excited to race with it for the first time, but I didn’t think it was going to work! Fortunately, just a minute or two before starting, it worked. Lesson learned: turn the Garmin on much sooner next time!
The first mile or so felt good. I was obsessively checking my pace until I realized that may not be the best thing for my overall time. Rookie mistake. I kept a pretty steady pace and ran without walking for about 2.25 miles, then the side cramps set in. They stuck with me off and on until the end.
Throughout the last mile and a half or so I took a few short walking breaks, mostly at the crest of the hills, to catch my breath a bit and get the cramps under control. I tried to wait until I got to the if I don’t walk now, I’m not sure I’ll finish point.
In the last half mile, Mother Nature took a turn. We rounded a bend and some serious wind came out of nowhere! Then, it started raining a bit. It certainly wasn’t ideal, but considering what it should have been for this time of year, I can’t complain too much. A bit of rain is better than a foot of snow! Either way, Kayla and I decided that Mother Nature is clearly not a runner!
Throughout it all, I had a great playlist to keep me going! “Watch Me Shine” by Joanna Pacitti is my ultimate motivational song when I’m working out and it came on during the last 1/4 mile or so, just when I really needed it. Good work, iPod, good work.
It was my first time running outside and my first run in over two miles in quite awhile. I wasn’t too sure about how it would go. My goal was to finish in under 50 minutes. I was quite pleasantly surprised with my time of 46 minutes (chip time of 45:57). I didn’t realize I had to change the settings on my Garmin to get my splits, so I don’t have that data, unfortunately. Kayla and I were more or less together the whole time, so hers are a good estimate of where I was at:
- 1: 10:43
- 2: 11:07
- 3: 12:10
- 4: 11:21
All in all, I would say it was a success!
